Mannsofts TelSrv

MannTelSrv by Rick Parrish at Mannsoft has been renamed to simply TelSrv. Version 4.10 was released a few days ago. TelSrv is a freeware Telnet Server for Windows which works with both Win32 BBS software, and also works with DOS based BBS software by using the network FOSSIL driver called NETFOSS.

TelSrv now comes with an optional mini-BBS called GameSrv, which allows sysops to run TelSrv as a simple door game server. GameSrv's function is to prompt the user for their logon and password, present them with an ANSI menu of door options, and it creates the door dropfiles and shells to NETFOSS to run the proper door.

NETFOSS

NETFOSS version 0.7 was released today. This high performance FOSSIL driver allows BBS and door games to run via a telnet connection. It's compatible with several Telnet servers, including Mannsofts TelSrv.

NETFOSS is freeware, and supports Windows NT4, 2000, and XP. It currently does not support legacy (9x) versions of windows. New in version 0.7 is full support for PCBoard. Echo setting issues under some telnet clients has also been fixed. New documentation includes details on configuring it for PCBoard, Telegard, RemoteAccess, and MysticBBS.

Web-LORP

Web-LORP is an HTML conversion of the popular door game "Legend of the Red Dragon". It is being developed by Alan at QCS Software. Due to legal issues, its name has been changed to "Legend of the Red Pengiun". It is being written in PHP, and uses a MySQL database. All the LORD data files (LENEMY.DAT, PLAYER.DAT, etc) have been converted to a MySQL database. The feel should be very simular to the original ANSI game, with the exception that the most feared beast in the game will be a little red penguin. :)

Allen is looking for volunteers to create some nice HTML and graphics for the Web-LORP project.

ProBoard- Updated June 11, 2002

The new version of ProBoard 2.17 turned out to too good to be true. The documentation included with it claimed that the former author, Philippe Leybaert has reclaimed the rights to the original source code and the ProBoard name.

According to the readme file, TeleGrafix breached the contract they signed when ProBoard was sold, and the terms of the contract allowed Philippe to reclaim the rights to the original source code and release it as freeware. The docs also thanked the Russian hacker Miha Ulanov for releasing a ProBoard version 2.16 Year 2000 patch, which fixed the Y2K bugs which had rendered ProBoard unusable after December 31 1999.

Philippe Leybeart had sold the ProBoard rights and source to Pat Clawson of Telegrafix a few years earlier, who eventually killed it off by turning it into expireware, refusing to allow even registered sysops to use his versions for more then 90 days before they drop dead. Clawson shut down his web server and vanished earlier this year, killing not only ProBoard but also the Searchlight BBS software he had also aquired. Clawson was the same guy responsable for killing off RIP graphics with his anti-sysop mentality many years ago.

After comparing the 2.17 proboard.exe to the 2.16 .exe, we have confirmed that this is a patched version of 2.16, in which someone has used Mihas Year 2000 fix and then added a few additional byte patches to enable the registered only features, removed the [unregistered] notices, and change the version number to 2.17. Both 2.16 and 2.17 are the same file size. The utilities in the archive have also been patched with Mihas Year 2000 fix, and other then that the only difference is their version number was also changed to 2.17.

Although version 2.17 is the only functional version of ProBoard available today, it would not feel right for us to offer this for download. However the ProBoard Site in Belgium decided to make version 2.17 available on their web server to the public. Daryl Hunt forwarded me a reply from Philippe Leybaert in which he denys any involvement, and says "I don't care about the hack at all. I have nothing to with ProBoard anymore, so it's not my problem."
